The freedom to lock up and leave

The freedom to lock up and leave: why land-lease living makes long-term travel possible

For many people approaching retirement, the dream isn’t to slow down. It’s finally having the freedom to go. After years of work, raising families and managing homes, this stage of life often becomes the moment to explore, to take the long road trips you once talked about, spend a season somewhere warmer or simply follow the sunshine for as long as you like.

But for many homeowners, that dream is held back by something incredibly practical: the home still needs constant attention. Lawns grow quickly, gardens need watering, mail piles up and a traditional property can’t be left to fend for itself for long stretches of time. Even with a neighbour stopping by occasionally, there’s always a lingering worry about security, maintenance or unexpected issues while you’re far from home. These responsibilities can quietly limit how long, and how far, you feel comfortable travelling.

This is where land-lease living offers something different. Purpose-built communities like Springtree are designed for easy living, low-maintenance homes and neighbours who genuinely look out for one another. It’s a lifestyle that makes it possible to lock up, head off on an adventure and know your home will be just the way you left it when you return.

Malcolm and Elsa, residents at Springtree Cobram, know this better than anyone. They’ve been part of the community for just over sixteen months, yet they’ve already spent four of those months travelling. Elsa puts it simply: “We love being on the move, but we also love knowing our home is safe without us. That’s a rare balance to find.”

Their story began back in 2021 when they sold their Melbourne home during COVID and headed north with no fixed destination. A Facebook post from a cattle station in far-west Queensland led to an unexpected opportunity. The owners were looking for volunteer caretakers for their tourism operation, and Malcolm and Elsa applied. “We thought, why not? Let’s just see where this takes us,” Elsa recalls. They were accepted and spent seven unforgettable months living and working on the station. That experience opened the door to an entirely new way of life.

When they recently set off again for their four-month trip, the bulk of their time was spent managing a bush caravan park just outside Alice Springs. As they share stories from their travels, it’s clear how much these experiences still excite them. Malcolm describes the region as “one of the most vibrant places we’ve spent time in. The media only shows the bad parts, but once you’re there, you realise how beautiful and full of life it really is.”

They loved meeting travellers from every corner of the country, swapping stories and hearing what had brought people to the Outback. One afternoon, a train driver from The Ghan wandered into the caravan park looking for a cabin, and his stories left a lasting impression. “He was a true character. We could’ve listened to him for hours,” Elsa says.

What makes this lifestyle sustainable for them is the peace of mind that comes from living at Springtree. Leaving their home for four months was effortless. “We didn’t worry once,” Elsa says. “Our home is very low-maintenance, and our neighbours checked on the house, watered the garden and made sure everything was fine. You really can’t put a price on that kind of support.” It’s the kind of reassurance that simply isn’t possible when living in a freestanding home in a town where you may not know anyone.

That sense of community became even more significant when Malcolm faced a sudden medical emergency earlier this year. As Elsa explains, “If it wasn’t for our neighbours stepping in when they did, it could have been a very different outcome. That experience showed us just how important this community really is.”

Now, as they prepare for their first Christmas in their brand-new home, Malcolm and Elsa are excited to welcome family from Melbourne and celebrate in a place that finally feels like both a sanctuary and a launchpad. Even their Dalmatian, Stella, has become part of the fabric of the community, affectionately known as the neighbourhood’s therapy dog. “She loves everyone, and everyone loves her back,” Malcolm smiles.

Their story beautifully captures what land-lease living is designed to offer: a home that doesn’t hold you back, a community that gives you confidence to travel for months, the freedom to explore Australia without worrying about what’s happening at home, and the comfort of returning to a place where you feel supported, connected and completely at ease.

For anyone dreaming of a retirement filled with travel, adventure and the flexibility to come and go as you please, this is a lifestyle that makes it genuinely possible. At Springtree, you don’t have to choose between freedom and security. You can enjoy both, every time you lock up, leave and return home again.
